At school my nickname was Harry Potter. I wore glasses (still do) and had dark hair (still do), so I fit the profile. But the name wasn’t used in a nice way. I was made fun of for how I spoke too, slowly and with a thick Sheffield accent.
When slow talking Harry Potter started his second business—Harvey Morton IT Support—aged 15 (my first business was selling key-rings and greeting cards at age 13), I was teased about it. Many thought it was a stupid idea. Maybe it was. But I didn’t see it that way. I saw it as an opportunity to channel my creativity into web design and marketing to help others.
With the support of family and some teachers, I was able to turn it into a successful business that kept running and growing throughout school, college and university.
In 2018, after three years in business, I was awarded the 2018 IPSE National Young Freelancer of the Year Award. Soon after, Harvey Morton IT Support rebranded to become Harvey Morton Digital — a full service freelance design, social media and influencer marketing consultancy.
The years since have been a bit of a whirlwind…
The award-winning digital consultant, speaker, writer and podcaster talking to you now is born out of a decade spent learning and understanding business, working out what works and what doesn’t to help you solve problems and stand out from the crowd. It’s born out of overcoming challenges and bullies. And it’s born out of a passion for inspiring others to do what they love no matter what people might say.
Since winning the IPSE award, I’ve worked with brands including Santander and Alton Towers on their digital marketing, featured on BBC News and radio, written for publications like The Sun, Tyla and Happiful Magazine, and spoken to live audiences across the country in my role as Youth Employment UK Ambassador. I also work closely with young people as a mentor and Anti-Bullying Ambassador for the Diana Award, helping to show them that they have the power to change the world.
Not bad for someone who has the looks of Harry Potter, but not the magic.
