Stadtblatt: External Database Integration with Wix Dynamic Pages Client: Data-Driven Business Website Project Type: Custom Database Integration & Dynamic Data Display Tools Used: Wix Velo, Wix Data API, External REST API, Secure Backend Functions, Dynamic Pages Challenge The client needed to display content from an external database (hosted outside Wix) on their Wix website — including product details, listings, and real-time updates. However, Wix does not allow direct external database connections for front-end rendering due to security and platform constraints. The challenge was to: Fetch and sync data from a third-party database Display it dynamically on Wix pages using dataset-driven logic Maintain data freshness without compromising performance or security Solution Using Wix Velo and the Wix Data API, I built a custom integration layer that securely bridges the external database with Wix’s dynamic content system. 1. Secure Backend Integration: The backend connects to the external database’s REST API using wix-fetch. A secure token-based authentication system ensures that only authorized requests are made from the Wix backend (never the client side). 2. Data Syncing & Transformation: Fetched records are processed and mapped to the structure of a Wix Data Collection. The system either updates or inserts records automatically, ensuring that the on-site data mirrors the external database in near real-time. 3. Dynamic Page Setup: Each record is linked to a dynamic page through a dataset connection. Users can browse listings, and clicking on an item opens a dedicated dynamic page showing details pulled directly from the external data source. 4. Scheduled Data Updates: A backend job periodically fetches updates from the external API and refreshes the Wix Data Collection, keeping the displayed content accurate without manual intervention. Results The client can now display external database content directly on their Wix site. Achieved real-time data synchronization without using any external plugins. Reduced manual data management time by over 80%. Enabled scalability — future data sources can be added easily by modifying the backend API endpoints. Wix’s built-in dataset filters were too limited — they didn’t support multiple dynamic filter combinations or real-time updates without page reloads. The challenge was to create a flexible, responsive data filtering solution that: Pulls customer data from a CMS collection Lets users filter by multiple criteria (e.g., name, location, service type, date) Updates results instantly and accurately Solution Using Wix Velo’s backend logic and custom front-end scripts, I developed an interactive filtering system that responds in real time to user input. 1. Dynamic Filtering Logic: Instead of relying on static datasets, I used the wix-data.query() API to dynamically fetch and filter customer records based on the user’s selected criteria. The filter conditions combine intelligently — meaning users can apply multiple filters simultaneously without conflicts. 2. Interactive UI Components: Dropdowns, text inputs, and toggle buttons were connected to Velo event handlers. When a user changes any filter, the system automatically re-queries the CMS and re-renders the filtered results — no page reloads required. 3. Performance Optimization: To handle large datasets efficiently, I implemented pagination and caching logic. This ensured fast load times even when thousands of records were involved. 4. Integration with Dynamic Pages: Each filtered record links to a detailed dynamic page displaying customer-specific data pulled from the same CMS collection. Results Delivered a fully dynamic and responsive data filtering experience within Wix. Reduced page reloads and improved search accuracy by 100%. All requests and responses happen on the backend, protecting API keys and sensitive data from exposure. 2. Data Mapping & Storage: Incoming JSON data is parsed and mapped into a corresponding Wix Data Collection. The integration checks for new or updated records and syncs them automatically without duplicating entries. 3. Dynamic Page Integration: Each synced record is linked to a dynamic page template that auto-populates content based on the item’s ID or slug. This allows the website to host hundreds of pages powered entirely by the external database — no manual setup required. 4. Ongoing Sync Jobs: A scheduled backend job runs periodically to pull updated data, ensuring that the content on Wix always reflects the latest information from the source. Notifications & Automation: Automatic email confirmations and reminders sent to both students and tutors. Backend logic ensures updates in availability are immediately reflected in dashboards. 4. Dynamic Pages & CMS Integration: Each tutor has a dynamic profile page with bio, subjects, and available slots. CMS stores tutors, sessions, and user-specific data, enabling scalable management as more tutors and students join.
